Luca Caldirola: Ex-Inter Defender Heading to Lazio?

Following on from their interest in Stuttgart defender Holger Badstuber, Lazio are again turning their heads to Germany as they look to fix up holes in their defence; following the incoming departure of Stefan De Vrij. This time, Lalaziosiamonoi.it have reported that ex-Inter Milan defender Luca Caldirola is on the radar of the Roman club.

Luca Caldirola currently plays for Bundesliga side Werder Bremen, with the Italian having signed from Inter Milan for €2.5m back in 2013. The 27-year-old has since spent a spell on loan with Darmstadt, and with his contract expiring in 2019, could be a viable option to replace De Vrij when he leaves in the summer. Caldirola is currently valued at €2m according to transfermarkt and therefore could prove to be a cheap replacement for the Dutchman, alongside the rumoured move for Peruvian defender Miguel Araujo.

Caldirola has played just six times for Werder Bremen in the past two seasons and is out of favour at the German club. A move to Lazio could inspire a career resurgence and see some of the form that saw him rise through the youth ranks at Inter. It would only be fitting, after all, to replace a player headed to Inter, with a former-Inter player.

Injuries are a worry for Luca Caldirola, with the defender missing over 200 days since September 2016 but we can hope that the defender sorts out his problems and comes to Lazio fighting fit.

Do you think that he can fill the void left by De Vrij? Will he prove to be the solution to Lazio’s defensive woes?
