Federico Marchetti: Is the Lazio Goalkeeper Headed to Juventus?

According to reports from La Gazetta dello Sport, Juventus are interested in bringing Federico Marchetti in as the backup for Wojciech Szczęsny. Szczęsny will be Juventus’ number 1 after Gianluigi Buffon’s retirement and according to the reports, Gigi gave the go ahead to bring in the experienced Marchetti. The 35-year-old’s contract will end this season and he will be a free agent, leaving the biancocelesti after 7 years of service. Not only is he a keeper with much experience, he will also help Juventus to fill their homegrown quota of players.

He joined Lazio after the departure of Fernando Muslera at the end of the 2010–11 season and quickly became one of the best keepers In Italy. Marchetti had a terrific season for Lazio. His presence and command over the defence, together with his numerous saves, helped Lazio achieve two consecutive Europa League qualifications. These were 5th and 4th place finishes in the 2010–11 and 2011–12 Serie A campaigns respectively.

After Wining a historic Coppa Italia title in 2013, his performances led him to be called up to the Italian national team.

After 7 great years with Lazio, this season he has been completely frozen out by Simone Inzaghi after numerous injuries last season. This allowed backup keeper Thomas Strakosha to play and get game time, establishing himself as the club’s number 1 GK this season.

Federico Marchetti is arguably one of the most iconic goalkeepers to ever wear a Lazio shirt.
