Stefan de Vrij will not stay at Lazio, it is now known for sure. No chance, no glimmer of hope, there is no dialogue with the club at all: the Dutch defender will choose his next destination soon and Lazio is already sifting the market to replace him.

The player said clearly to the fans outside the gates of Formello: “Renewal with Lazio? There is no chance for me to stay at Lazio. Zero and less than zero. The club no longer speaks to me”, he said. “There is no glimmer of hope, and there probably hasn’t been for months.”

The Dutch centre-back joined Lazio from Feyenoord in June of 2014 for an undisclosed fee even though he was rumoured to join Manchester United instead. He has made 114 total appearances for Lazio in his four seasons despite being out for most of the 2015-16 season with an injury. Surprisingly, De Vrij has contributed offensively with 10 goals in his career with Lazio. He also has 35 senior caps for the Dutch national team

According to transfermarkt.com, Stefan De Vrij has the third highest transfer value on Lazio, valued at €40 million, behind only Sergej Milinković-Savić and Ciro Immobile. There was speculation that the 26-year-old would either re-sign with Lazio or be sold in the January transfer window as there was interest from the Premier League and the two Milan clubs, but in the end it was likely that he would leave for free to Inter at the season’s end.

It will be a big blow for i biancocelesti when De Vrij leaves, but supporters are hopeful Claudio Lotito and sporting director Igli Tare can find the right replacement for the talented Dutch defender.
