Through its official website, Serie B side Perugia has officially announced its new coach: Alessandro Nesta. The former World Cup champion, will accompany the Umbrian club in the last league match against the leaders Empoli and in the race to Serie A during the playoffs. Here is the press release of the club: ‘Mister Alessandro Nesta will make use of the collaboration of the assistant coach Lorenzo Rubinacci and the athletic trainer Mirco Spedicato. The press conference is scheduled for tomorrow, Tuesday, May 15, at 16:00’

Like his old comrade Massimo Oddo, with whom he celebrated a World Cup victory, he has entered the coaching race in Italy. The coach from Abruzzo, in 2015, took the place of Baroni on the bench of Pescara with one game left plus the playoffs. The promotion didn’t arrive (he would have to wait one more season) but Oddo managed to conquer the future. What will Alessandro Nesta have to do, who will try to follow in the footsteps of his former teammate at Milan: Santopadre has chosen him as his heir of Breda on the bench of Perugia, a playoff won arithmetically and a day still to play before the playoff, to give new life and try to conquer the Serie A. An unsettling choice, but one that can prove successful.

This would be his first experience as a coach in Italy, for Nesta, after a coaching stint with Miami FC. Victorious in the NASL Spring Championship and NASL Fall Championship, above all, with a path to applause in the US Open Cup: eliminated Orlando City and his friend Kaka in the round of 32, eliminated Atlanta United in the second round, but then lost in the quarter-finals 1-0 at home against Cincinnati. Triumphing in the Spring and Fall Championship, he gained access to  the final four of NASL, where he was eliminated in the semifinals, on penalties by the New York Cosmos.

Alessandro Nesta, in Miami, has given life to players discarded by other teams, such as Stefano Pinho, Poku, and Rennella who became a protagonist in the NASL after stints with Cesena, Genoa, Lugano, and Liga. The formation? Initially the 4-3-3, which turned, in time, into a 4-3-1-2, that of Sarri, and Ancelotti at Milan, with which he won the Champions League. Diamanti, Cerri, and Di Carmine, therefore, can rest assured: they will be exalted, without risking a place, from Nesta’s offensive ideas.

“I propose an offensive style, with 4-3-1-2. My role models? Ancelotti is a great reference point, for how he manages the group, for his approach to games. I learned a lot from Zeman: 20 years ago it was very modern. I studied Conte, Giampaolo and Sarri, with the latter doing something more: the way he wants to win is through constant research of the game”, Nesta said a few months ago. Now, in the playoffs, he will have to demonstrate, in a short time (signed until the end of the season), how much he is worth on the bench.
