5 Strikers Lazio could sign as a replacement for Felipe Caicedo

Back in the 2013/14 season, Italian striker Ciro Immobile won the capocannoniere with Torino after scoring 22 goals. He moved to Germany to Borussia Dortmund the following season in a big money move, but failed to impress, and was sent to Sevilla in Spain, where he was still in search of good form. This was once upon a time… Today, he is one of the most profiled strikers in Europe: top scorer in the Serie A TIM, and in the Europa League, breaking records on records. Behind Ciro Immobile, there was nothing however. The club had chosen Felipe Caicedo to back-up Immobile, who satisfied Simone Inzaghi for commitment and movements (even if the coach only had a limited number of choices and said he was satisfied to boost the players confidence), but failed to guarantee a good number of shots or goals capable of providing a real alternative to the Italian striker, and for coach Inzaghi. No back-up cost Lazio throughout the season, especially in the pen-ultimate match against Inter that decided who went to Champions League, as Luis Alberto was injured and Immobile was not 100%.

Sporting Director Igli Tare is moving on the market to guarantee a possible replacement for Immobile now. It is not a priority to him currently (the defense is), but opportunities are being assessed all around Europe and South America. It is not a priority, because at the home of Lazio, they never fail in terms of patience: some of their best talents (Felipe Anderson, Luis Alberto, and Milinkovic-Savic), with time, have definitely blossomed after a year or more of experience and exposure to the Italian lifestyle (and football). The Serie A is tough, tactical, with strong defenses – it is not surprising that Caicedo has had some difficulties. Lazio would seem to have decided to try other roads (not officially, but for now), to test other profiles. Below are some perfect options to support Immobile:

Lucas Perez

Arsenal-owned striker, Perez has just had a good season with Deportivo La Coruna. He knows Luis Alberto very well, is and expert who offers good technical guarantees, and wants to experience the thrill of Serie A. His agent has practically offered him to Lazio, magnifying Rome and specifying that his client would have a great desire to play in Europe again, specifically in the Europa League next season.

Luan

Class of ’93 from Gremio, Luan is part of the Brazilian tradition. Tare could decide to support Luis Alberto, who plays behind Immobile, with Luan, who is a Felipe Anderson 2.0 in attack, able to keep the opponents defences tense, uncomfortable near their goal. However, the impression remains that his name was thrown into the middle of a pile of many other different other players. He is an eligible candidate, but there has been no real contact or negotiation yet.

Karl Toko Ekambi

In Angers, he made sparks, attracting the focus of market insiders and agents. French paper L’Equipe in a piece some time ago, pulled Lazio in the middle of the rumours, with great curiosity to see him paired up top with Immobile. In France, Tare enjoys the strong alliance of Jorge Mendes, which could facilitate the purchase, even if this time he has nothing to do with Monaco (who bought Keita last year, removing chestnuts from Lotito’s fire)Like a lot around Europe, he is a class of ’92, and could be an interesting profile, but he costs a lot (Villarreal has offered 16 million, and has not been able to move the waters a lot). Maybe too much for an alternative to Immobile.

Jonathan Bamba

Younger (born in 1996) from Ligue 1. Talented and unpredictable, he is a striker who belongs to the rich list of French-League players that have popped up in Lazio’s transfer market ideas. He can also play out wide in attack, and could offer Inzaghi a viable alternative in a 4-3-3 formation, that was rare used (if it all) last season.

Mario Balotelli

In una parola – The Italian Dream.

Back in the national team, thanks to the appointment of Roberto Mancini, his old admirer – he is on the Azzurri bench, and he is a striker who historically decided matches. Who wants him, wants him because his is technically superfine and powerful, and is a terrific finisher. He is bouncing off two good seasons in Ligue 1, with Nice, but he could come back to Italy: he is looking for the right opportunity. His agent Mino Raiola has some relationship with Lotito and Tare, and they must try to understand if there are margins to aim within for the player, and who the actual competition is for the player, in addition to costsIn the meantime, there are those who continue to dream of the signing.
