Remo Freuler, the Atalanta midfielder in Lazio’s sights, speaks about the inclusion in Switzerland’s World Cup 2018 squad to Mattinoonline.ch: “I grew up a lot thanks to Gasperini, Atalanta was the right choice for me, Lazio? They are rumors that are dismissed the time they are found, I have a contract with Atalanta until 2022, I want to stay in Bergamo where everyone loves me and I feel important”
The class of 92′ midfielder was born in the small town of Ennenda, Switzerland. He started off his career in his native country before making the move from FC Luzern to Atalanta in January of 2016 for €2 million. He has since made 87 appearances with the club from Bergamo, scoring 12 goals and adding 8 assists along the way. Freuler’s current market value is listed at €9 million according to transfermarkt.co.uk which is the highest it has been in his career and will most likely continue to rise. He also had an average Serie A match rating of 7.08 according to whoscored.com, tied with Bryan Cristante for third best on the team.
Switzerland announced on Monday their 23-man squad for the World Cup and the Atalanta star was likely thrilled to be included. The Swiss were drawn in a group with Brazil, Serbia, and Costa Rica and will hope to improve on a round-of-sixteen exit in the 2014 World Cup.
Lazio will be looking for a central midfield replacement should Sergej Milinković-Savić leave. Freuler was rumoured as a potential replacement but it looks like i biancocelesti are going to have to look elsewhere if the Serbian superstar departs.
Freuler isn’t the only player from Atalanta that Lazio has had their eyes on as fellow midfielder Bryan Cristante and striker Andrea Petagna have both been linked to the capital club this summer.
