World Cup | Uruguay vs Egypt: Martin Caceres performance rating

Lazio’s Martin Caceres started at left back for Uruguay’s first game of this World Cup and did not disappoint.

First off, Caceres showed off his versatility to play in any position on the back line. He started at left back, when he usually starts on the right in most of the games he played for Lazio this year. He looked solid defensively, while also helping bring the ball up field on multiple occasions.

He also showed his experience playing in his 76th cap for his country and earning the trust of his coach, playing the entire 90 minutes, securing a clean sheet. He was an offensive threat during set pieces, produced 3 crosses, and was around the ball on multiple occasions while managing a shot.

With this recent performance, it is hard to understand why Lazio would not pick up their option to re-sign the defender for the upcoming season, seeing that the team is currently lacking experience on the back line with the departure of Stefan De Vrij.

In our opinion, continued showings like this one at the World Cup should convince the Lazio management to bring him back.

We give him a 7.5 rating for Uruguay’s World Cup opener against Egypt.
