World Cup Player Watch: Martin Caceres – Saudi Arabia 0-1 Uruguay

Martin Caceres helped Uruguay as they once again claimed a narrow 1-0 win over World Cup opposition; Saudi Arabia this time. The team looked unconvincing going forward; but solid in defence – with Caceres, alongside the likes of Diego Godin and Jose Gimenez, keeping things tight at the back.

Caceres once again demonstrated his defensive ability; whilst also posing a threat – especially with his long balls. Caceres has been playing at left-back for Uruguay, and he works well in this position and role.

Caceres’ positioning left him as a constant open door for Godin and Gimenez to pass through, allowing them to bounce balls off Caceres before processing further up the pitch. When pushing forward, Caceres was also constantly moving to give Uruguay’s midfielders a passing option yet he never strayed too far out of position.

Martin Caceres once again showed glimpses of defensive brilliance that we generally failed to see at Lazio, yet with another year extended on his contract; this could be a great sign for Lazio fans. If Uruguay keep going forward, there is nothing to say they can’t challenge for the World Cup; giving Caceres the boost in confidence he needs to become a regular starter for the biancoceleste.
