As reported a few weeks ago, it was looking highly likely that one of Wallace or Bastos, if not both, would leave Lazio this offseason. After both players had underwhelming seasons last year, it was believed they might not have had a future in a Lazio jersey. Instead, CittaCeleste are now reporting that both the Brazilian and Angolan defenders are set to stay in Rome and are already working hard in Auronzo to regain the trust of coach Simone Inzaghi and the fans. With Stefan Radu and Francesco Acerbi locked into starting roles, and with Luiz Felipe’s breakthrough campaign last season, Wallace and Bastos have an uphill battle in order to regain a starting role in Inzaghi’s 3-5-2 formation. Some competition in defence could be what is needed to bolster a position that was clearly one of Lazio’s weak spots last campaign, after the team gave up 49 goals in 38 games. Both players have the potential to elevate their play and they will try to force Inzaghi’s hand in giving them another chance to prove themselves.
