One of the more well known Lazio fans is the former referee Pierluigi Collina. He was during his career named FIFA’s “Best Referee of the Year” six consecutive times and is widely considered to be the greatest football referee of all time. Collina has still been involved in football, as an unpaid consultant to the Italian Football Referees Association (AIA), as the Head of Referees for the Football Federation of Ukraine since 2010, and as a member of the UEFA Referees Committee.
However, now Collina leaves the role of designator of the European federation for “personal reasons”. The official note published on the Federcalcio website states that taking Collina’s place will be another Italian, Roberto Rosetti, current supervisor of VAR.
Here is the statement made by Collina at the time of the announcement: “It has been a privilege to have played a role in UEFA over the last 8 years and I am very proud of the results achieved with my referees and the UEFA Referees Committee, I would like to thank UEFA for the strong support given to the referees in recent years and also all the match officials for their full commitment.”
