The 1999 UEFA Super Cup was a football match played on August 27th, 1999 between the 1998–99 UEFA Champions League winners, Manchester United, and Lazio [winners of the 1998–99 UEFA Cup Winners’ Cup].
All eyes were on Tallinn, the heart of Estonia earlier this week. At the Le Coq Arena, Real Madrid and Atletico Madrid, participated in European Super Cup in a very intense Madrid derby. Atletico took the match by a score of 4-2 – former Lazio man Diego Simeone and his club had defeated Julen Lopetegui’s Real Madrid.
Luca Marchegiani, the Lazio goalkeeper who in 1999 defeated the ‘Invincibles’ of Manchester United, has raised the continental trophy. Commentator of the match for Sky Sport, in the introduction to the challenge Marchegiani recalled that triumph:
“I have dealt with great emotion. We came from the Cup Winners’ Cup victory, which was not the UEFA Cup but gave you access to this competition at the time with a win. We were playing against Manchester United, probably one of the strongest players ever, so we started from underdogs. But we won that game with great satisfaction and emotion. It is not true that this is a second-rated trophy, it is a very important cup”.
