Croatia, Badelj: ‘Honoured to be captain, the atmosphere is excellent’

Lazio midfielder Milan Badelj played the full 90 minutes in Croatia’s friendly match against Portugal, taking over ownership of the captains armband when Luka Modric was taken off with around half an hour left of the match. Croatia ultimately drew 1-1 with Portugal and Badelj spoke to the press after the match (via CittaCeleste):

The armband? Even the friendly match against Russia last year I finished as a captain. Against Portugal it could have been better but we were also lucky because they had some chances to win the match.

They are a very strong team, but we were compact. The atmosphere in the group is excellent, even better after the World Cup in Russia.

I was very impressed by the motivation of the most experienced players, who continue to want the best for their team. We are all honored to wear this shirt. Now Spain is waiting for us, it will be a beautiful match.
