Serbia, Milinkovic-Savic: “I try to give my best, but my role is misunderstood”

In the UEFA Nations League match against Romania, Serbian national coach Mladen Krstajić decided to deploy Lazio’s Sergej Milinkovic-Savic behind Aleksandar Mitrović in a center attacking midfield role. He played for 64 minutes in the competition and then was replaced.

He failed to shine as the audience of the Rajko Mitic would have liked, but in an interview given to the newspaper Zurnal.rs the biancocelesti midfielder wanted to make things clear: “My role in the field is misunderstood,” he began.“It’s true that with Lazio I often move forward towards the goal often, but doing it does not fall exactly within my responsibilities. Of course, when I can, I try to exploit every opportunity, but the main purpose of who plays my role is not to score,”

Then he added: “I do not have many chances to play with Serbia, which is why every game means a lot to me and I try to do my best”.

On expectations: “We wanted to win both matches and take home the six points. We drew against Romania, as we were not been able to make the most out of all our opportunities”.

On the fans: “We were afraid there would not be a lot of fans on our side, but it did not happen, I realized that the support of the public is really important to be able to do well with the national team. I hope to see more and more fans, starting with the next match in Belgrade”.
