It was a disappointing afternoon for Laziale everywhere as the Derby della Capitale finished 3-1 to Roma. Roma vs Lazio is always a memorable clash but this will be one for Lazio to forget as Roma came away with the three points.
The match started brightly for Lazio with an open game, both sides having their fair share of chances. It looked all set to stay 0-0 at half-time before Lorenzo Pellegrini scored for the Giallorossi just before the break. Lazio hit back in the second half with Ciro Immobile capitalising on an error from Roma defender Fazio to slot one past Robin Olsen into the back of the net.
Things soon turned for the worst for Lazio as Aleksandar Kolarov scored a free-kick after Milan Badelj needlessly gave away a foul on the edge of the penalty box. Then, in the 86th minute, Fazio made up for his error with a goal scored from a header from a set-piece. Lazio tried to fight back but it was ultimately too late for the Biancocelesti.
Lazio were let down by a lack of movement and attacking intuition from the men at the front. Too often it seemed as though Ciro Immobile had to try and do it all on his own and, admittedly, when opportunities arose for him to work with the team, he failed to take them. The defence were disorganised, especially at set-pieces and whilst Strakosha made some decent early saves, he did not do enough to prevent Roma’s goals.
Lazio will need to recover from this in time to travel to Germany on Thursday, when they will play Eintracht Frankfurt in the Europa League. Just 3 days later, Lazio will host Fiorentina at the Stadio Olimpico; another tough test for Inzaghi’s side.
