Report: Lazio challenge Roma and Napoli for Bilbao’s Muniain

According to what has been reported by CalcioMercato, via Lazionews.eu, Lazio are interested in signing Athletic Bilbao winger Iker Muniain. Muniain, 25, has previously been a target of Juventus and Inter but the latest reports suggest Lazio will face domestic competition for the Spaniard from Roma and Napoli.

Muniain’s contract with Bilbao expires in 2019 and the left-winger could be set to leave Basque county in favour of a move to Serie A. Muniain can also play as a second-striker, with it thought that Tare, Lotito and Inzaghi could be looking to replace Luis Alberto, with the Spaniard not performing up to standards this season so far.

Analysis:

Although at first glance this seems just an unlikely pipe dream, it would certainly not be impossible. With Muniain’s contract expiring in the summer, Lazio could sign the Spaniard on a free. However, unless the Biancocelesti achieve Champions League qualification, he could opt to move to Roma or Napoli instead – for a bigger pay check and a chance to play in Europe’s most renowned club competition.

Muniain has scored four in nine La Liga matches this season for Bilbao, most notably in their 1-1 draw with Real Madrid. The tricky winger captained Bilbao against Eibar in October, demonstrating his character in the side and influence in the dressing room. The Spaniard would be a big coup for Lazio but one that just seems too unlikely for now.
