Italy, Mancini: ‘Immobile is important – he knows how to score goals’

Italy will face Portugal at San Siro tonight and Roberto Mancini is making his final adjustments to the squad ahead of the decisive UEFA Nations League clash. Speaking at his press conference ahead of the clash, Mancini said the following, including offering words of support for Ciro Immobile:

“Berardi or Immobile? I still have 24 hours to decide, but Immobile has a good chance to play from the beginning. he has an important quality, that of knowing how to score goals.

“Jorginho and Verratti are two great players, very technically strong, so the agreement is easy to find.

“I am very happy to be here, at first it was not easy but the guys showed a lot of goodwill, we are improving, but we will need more time, and the fact that there will be 70,000 people tomorrow is a good starting point, together with last performances.

“The national team has never died, in the double challenge against Sweden, Italy would have deserved to qualify, there was a lot of bad luck, unfortunately it happened to other national teams, but we have to start again.

“The Nations League was the first goal and we will try to win the group, but the real goal is the qualification for Euro 2020, you need to give a young group experience, but the guys who are growing – trust me.

“Romagnoli has had a problem, Acerbi will arrive tonight, and tomorrow we will have Mancini and Kean with us, after which the players who have played the most will be Chiellini, Jorginho, Insigne and Florenzi.

“Portugal without CR7? Portugal has Bruma and Rafa Silva who are extraordinary, they are champions of Europe. They remain a great team even without Ronaldo, one of the best for the game, I think it will be beautiful even without Cristiano but we would have liked to have been on the pitch.”
