France vs Uruguay, International Friendly: Caceres plays full 90′ in 1-0 loss

In the second match of International football for Lazio’s Martin Caceres and Uruguay this break, the South American nation took on France. After a marginal 1-0 defeat to Brazil, losing the match due to a penalty kick, Oscar Tabares’ side wanted to make amends as soon as possible and what better way to accomplish this, then by defeating the World Cup Champions?

This match played out with an eerily high similarity to the Brazil match; a key takeaway? the words “once again”. France were very organized and pressed hard with pace on the flanks, whilst Uruguay put out a proper defensive performance. However, moving forward, their attacking duo of Luis Suarez and Edinson Cavani were unable to find the back of the net. Uruguay conceded a penalty in the second half and were unable to score, sequentially losing 1-0, once again.

Due to a numerous amount of injuries to Uruguay’s starting eleven, especially in the defensive department (Godin, Gimenez, and Coates) Tabares had to switch up his regular back line for the two friendlies. For just the second time playing together, Diego Laxalt, Matias Suarez, Bruno Mendez, and Caceres had a proper performance as they did their best to keep their opponents off the scoresheet.

A shoutout, however, must go to the Lazio owned defender. Right back, right wing-back; left back, left wing-back; center back – the 31-year-old can play anywhere along the backline showing his versatility and added value. Whenever called upon, the player rises to the occasion and despite two consecutive losses for his nation, you have to give him credit for replacing the usual center backs and dealing with pacey and physical attackers.

Simone Inzaghi needs to realize Caceres’ potential and value. Although his age is starting to catch up to him, a starting position is still reasonable. Replacing Marusic on the right, or even Lulic on the left, if he is not seriously taken into consideration soon, we will see the player unfortunately leave Rome in the look-out for more first-team playing time.
