Report: Lazio interested in Donati and Caligiuri

According to Corriere dello Sport, Lazio are interested in signing two Italian footballers from the Bundesliga. The first is FC Schalke 04’s midfielder Daniel Caligiuri and the second is right-back Giulio Donati of FSV Mainz 05.

Currently 30 years of age, Caligiuri has a contract expiring in the summer of 2020. Capable of playing anywhere on the right flank, Caligiuri is the perfect player to come into this Lazio side to increase competition and bolster the team’s quality. He has over 250 appearances in the Bundesliga in addition to 29 appearances in European competition, with 36 goals scored and 46 assists provided. Starting his professional career with Freiburg, he spent eight years at the club before joining Wolfsburg. After three and a half years, he joined Schalke.

The simpler of the two potential transfers, at 28 years of age, Donati refused to renew his contract (that expires this upcoming summer) with the German side which has effectively led to his exclusion from the team; he has just one appearance worth 31 minutes of Bundesliga football this season. Starting his career at Inter where he played for their Primavera sides, he was sent out on loan to Lecce, Padova, and Grosseto before being purchased by Bayer Leverkusen in 2013 for a fee of around €3 million. With the club, he made 16 Champions League appearances and 43 Bundesliga appearances over two and a half seasons before being purchased by Mainz in 2016. He has made 80 appearances for the side – a consistent starter before this season. A right-back or left back in a four-man defense, Donati also has the capability to play on the outside positions of a three back-formation, making him a very versatile and desired target for Igli Tare and Lazio.
