Ciro Immobile has now gone 4 Serie A matches without scoring. This has only happened one other time in career with Lazio when in November to December of 2016 he went 7 games without a goal (according to @laziopage).

Ciro’s goalscoring for Lazio has been incredible. He’s got 94 goals and 26 assists in 171 Serie A games; 62 of those goals in just 2-and-a-half seasons with i biancocelesti. Having only two of these “droughts” in less than three seasons shows just how clinical Immobile is in front of goal. Last season in particular, Immobile was out-of-this-world scoring a whopping 41 goals in just 47 games in all competitions and even shared the Capocannoniere as Serie A top scorer with Mauro Icardi. This season, he’s got only 11 in all competitions as we hit the halfway mark of this season.

So what’s the issue with this goalless spell? Is it a lack of effort? Definitely not. Immobile puts heart and soul into every game. The problem in my opinion is that he’s trying to do too much. With Luis Alberto and the rest of Immobile’s supporting cast not yet playing at the same level they were last season, Ciro has had to do a lot of the work himself. He’s running all over the place and even dropping back to midfield to try to be the creator and the finisher. He’s also been very unlucky, hitting woodwork and missing by very little a lot this season.

This drought won’t last long however. Every striker needs a good supporting cast to succeed, and I believe as players like Luis Alberto and Milinkovic-Savic find their form, so will Immobile. Ciro is a proven goalscorer and by the end of the season I’m sure he’ll be near the top of the scoring charts, as he always is. For us laziali, there’s no need to panic.
