For those of us who support Lazio from the United Kingdom, we are always wondering about, or waiting on, an opportunity to see our favourite team live in our home country. Premier League teams are some of the most lucrative oppositions to face in European competitions, both financially and motivationally; a big win against a money-fuelled Premier League side carrying important significance.
So, when will Lazio play against a Premier League club? Well, two Premier League clubs remain in this year’s edition of the Europa League, Arsenal and Chelsea, both considered to be the frontrunners in with a chance of winning the competition when comes the time of the final in May.
Both Arsenal and Chelsea could prove worthy opposition for Lazio; but the three sides must first qualify past the next knock-out round. Lazio will play against La Liga outfit Sevilla, whilst Chelsea take on Swedish side Malmo and Arsenal face Belarusian side BATE Borisov. With 32 teams left in the tournament, the next round will see just 16 – giving the Biancocelesti a great chance of coming up against English opposition.
Chelsea have three of the competition’s highest performing players in Callum Hudson-Odoi, who has been linked with a move to Bayern Munich, Ruben Loftus-Cheek and Willian; with 7.65, 7.65 and 7.64 ratings on WhoScored respectively. Lazio’s highest performer, meanwhile, is Felipe Caicedo with a 7.38 rating on WhoScored whilst Arsenal’s Aaron Ramsey, who is going to be joining Lazio’s Serie A rivals Juventus, has been his team’s best offering, with a 7.35 rating.
The Europa League returns to our screens in just over two weeks now, yet for those of us in England, Lazio could soon be arriving to our shores. A potential tie with either Chelsea or Arsenal is an important reward for the victor of Lazio’s clash with Sevilla and, either way, Laziale will be waiting eagerly to see what the next few months will bring.
