Cagliari 1-2 Lazio: Post Match Review

After a very disappointing 3-1 loss to Atalanta last weekend, Lazio are pretty much out of the Champions League qualification race. The only thing left to fight for is a spot in the Europa League. Even though the Europa League is still a competition worth fighting for, Simone Inzaghi needs to try and get something out of this season or he could be potentially in a position to get sacked.

The first half started off pretty strong for the Biancocelesti. Felipe Caicedo almost gave Lazio the lead but he came too close to Cagliari goalkeeper Alessio Cragno as they both collided and the ball went just over the bar. Lazio had another chance as Joaquin Correa went on a wonderful solo run and squared it to Caicedo but his shot was unfortunately blocked by his teammate Marco Parolo. Lazio finally scored just little over thirty minutes into the match as Adam Marusic placed a nice pass into the box and found Luis Alberto who slotted the ball nicely into the bottom right corner.

The second half started with Lazio doubling the lead as Joaquin Correa scored just eight minutes into the half. Cagliari started putting on the pressure for the rest of the half but Silvio Proto did a good job at holding them back from getting back into the match. A consolation goal came near the end of the match for Cagliari as Leonardo Pavoletti scored and stripped the clean sheet from Proto on the Belgian’s Serie A debut.

This match does not really help Lazio in the Champions League qualification race but it is a confidence booster for Inzaghi’s men as they get ready for their big Coppa Italia final versus Atalanta on Wednesday.
