Coppa Italia Final, Atalanta vs Lazio: Match Preview, Expected Lineups & Prediction

After months of waiting and cheering the Biancocelesti through the rest of the competition, the Coppa Italia final is finally here and the stage is set for Atalanta vs Lazio at the Stadio Olimpico. Although Lazio are playing the match on their own turf, Atalanta will be eager to upset the Biancocelesti and bring home their first piece of silverware in the 21st century; whilst Lazio are looking for their first trophy since last year’s edition of the Supercoppa Italiana, which Inzaghi’s side defeated Juventus to lift.

Atalanta come into the game in good form with high spirits. The Bergamo side have been one of the surprise stories of the Serie A season this term and have put up a serious challenge for UEFA Champions League qualification; Gasperini’s side currently fourth with just a couple of games left to play. Therefore, the team will come into this game against Lazio with passion and a desire to win that Inzaghi’s side may not necessarily have. Atalanta may, however, not push for this final as hard as they would have liked as, with games still to play in the league that the Bergamo side must win; whereas Lazio have the pressure off in the league if they can lift the Coppa trophy this evening.

Lazio come into this game with 3 wins from their last four games in all competitions; with 2-1 wins away at Cagliari and Sampdoria, a 1-0 away win at San Siro in the second leg of the Coppa semi-final against AC Milan and a 3-1 home defeat to Gasperini’s Atalanta in the league a couple weeks ago – a result that does not bode well for Lazio heading into tonight’s game. The Biancocelesti will take optimism from the fact that they lifted the trophy in 2013 and some parts of the team, such as Senad Lulic, were present when the side defeated Roma – Lulic scoring that famous winning goal.

Coppa Italia Final – Atalanta vs Lazio Prediction

It promises to be a memorable Coppa Italia final and the first in recent history to not feature the imposing force of Juventus. Both teams will be eager to lift this important piece of silverware and for Lazio it could mean the difference between qualification for European football next season and missing out on it completely. Lazio have shown in the past that they can shine in cup finals whilst Atalanta’s lack of big-game experience could cost them, as it has done in Europe in the past few seasons. However, this is a strong Atalanta side and Gasperini’s coaching could give them the edge.
