UEFA have officially announced that they intend to open an investigation into Lazio fans following reports of racist chanting in the club’s Europa League clash against French side Stade Rennais last week.

This comes after Lazio President Claudio Lotito described white skin as “normal” when discussing the recent incidents of racism in Italian football last week, suggesting that “I don’t think Lazio distinguish skin colour.”

UEFA’s ethical and disciplinary body will conclude their investigation and give their verdict on 17 October.

Here is the official statement from UEFA:

Disciplinary proceedings have been initiated following the match of the UEFA Europa League group stage between S.S. Lazio and Stade Rennais FC (2-1), played on 3 October in Italy. Charges against S.S. Lazio: – Racist behaviour – Article 14 of the UEFA Disciplinary Regulations (DR). The UEFA control, ethics and disciplinary body will deal with this case at its meeting on 17 October.”
