2019/20 Serie A, Lazio 5-1 Sampdoria: Match Report

Lazio vs Sampdoria

After a tight win against Napoli, Lazio headed into the return fixture against Sampdoria looking to continue their incredible form and to keep up the same pace as Scudetto contenders Juventus and Inter. This second half of the season began for Lazio at home in Rome at the Stadio Olimpico.

Lazio vs Sampdoria: First Half

The first half began splendidly as Simone Inzaghi’s men continued with their goal-scoring ways as a ball was played to Ciro Immobile who was able to hold off the defender all the way to the net until he could get a shot away. While the shot was saved, Felipe Caicedo came in for the cleanup and tapped in the rebound to give Lazio a 1-0 lead.

Just ten minutes after the opening goal, a cross was sent into the box by Manuel Lazzari which than struck the arm of Sampdoria’s Nicola Murru and a penalty was awarded to Lazio. Who else other than Immobile to step up and convert the penalty to give Lazio the 2-0 lead.

The Biancocelesti rampage didn’t end there as a lovely long ball by Francesco Acerbi found Immobile who controlled it, made a lovely solo run and scored to give Lazio a 3-0 lead. The first half ended and the match seemed to already be over.

Lazio vs Sampdoria: Second Half

The second half did not see an end to the Lazio goal-fest, as Bastos – the man who scored in the Coppa Italia earlier this week against Cremonese – got himself on the score sheet; Lucas Leiva set him up for a lovely finish to make it 4-0 for Lazio.

Just over ten minutes later, another handball in the box went against Sampdoria as defender Omar Colley slid to block Luis Alberto’s shot and ended up stopping it with his arm. Once again, Immobile stepped up to take the penalty, converting it to give Lazio the 5-0 lead and get him his 23rd goal of the season.

The game ended off with a consolation goal scored by Karol Linetty, followed by a straight red card for Sampdoria defender Julian Chabot just three minutes later for his dangerous challenge on Bobby Adekanye.

Lazio vs Sampdoria: Final Thoughts

Lazio’s 5-1 win means they are now on 11 consecutive Serie A wins. They head into a tough week where they face Napoli in the Coppa Italia Quarter-Finals on Tuesday and then face Roma on Sunday in the Derby della Capitale.
