2019/20 Serie A, Lazio 0-0 Hellas Verona: Match Report

Two of Serie A’s surprise packages of the season met this evening in Rome as Simone Inzaghi’s Lazio hosted Hellas Verona. Lazio vs Hellas Verona was always going to be a fascinating match, with both sides eager to not drop any points at this crucial time in the season. The match finished as a 0-0 draw but both sides had the opportunity to take all 3 points. The hosts were unlucky as Luis Alberto hit the woodwork twice and a spirited Veronese performance denied the Biancocelesti another impressive victory.

Lazio vs Hellas Verona: First Half

The game started as an even affair. The first half an hour of the match was quiet, with both sides limited to a chance each. Just after the 20th minute, prolific forward Ciro Immobile had a shot saved by Hellas Verona goalkeeper Marco Silvestri. Immobile found himself in space and tried his luck but the opposing keeper did very well to deny the Serie A top scorer. Verona had a fair few chances of their own in the early stages of the match but nothing to trouble Biancocelesti keeper Thomas Strakosha too much. Luis Alberto had Lazio’s second major chance of the game when he had a shot saved, once again, by Silvestri. Just a few minutes later, Alberto saw another missed chance as he fired a shot just wide on the brink of half-time.

Lazio vs Hellas Verona: Second Half

The second half started slowly and both sides struggled to get into any sort of rhythm. Verona had the first big chance of the half when Thomas Strakosha denied a fantastic effort from Darko Lazovic. Just five minutes later, Luis Alberto had another attempt on goal that bounced off the post. The game began to slow down even more towards the end. Simone Inzaghi brought on Jony and Adam Marusic for Senad Lulic and Manuel Lazzari respectively in the 71st minute. Bookings for both Stefan Radu and Sergej Milinkovic-Savic in this game mean the duo will be unavailable for Simone Inzaghi on Saturday against Parma. Inzaghi’s final substitution was to replace Felipe Caicedo with Marco Parolo, the Ecuadorian looking exhausted and needed in case Joaquin Correa does not return in time for the trip to Parma. Ciro Immobile had a late opportunity to give Lazio the three points but saw his shot drift just wide.

Lazio vs Hellas Verona: Final Thoughts

In all, Hellas Verona put in yet another strong performance to deny Lazio a vital three points. It is now vital that Simone Inzaghi respects and acknowledges the strengths of Verona rather than focusing on the team’s weaknesses in the match.
