Felipe Caicedo to Make Possible Return to Ecuador NT

Lazio striker Felipe Caicedo has been an integral part of the Biancocelesti this season, scoring eight and assisting four in under 900 Serie A minutes played.

The Ecuadorian has become a key player for Lazio off the bench and as a replacement for either Ciro Immobile and Joaquin Correa. This has gotten the attention of Jordi Cruyff, the new head coach of the Ecuador National Team, who wants to bring Caicedo back into the fold for the Copa America and 2022 World Cup qualifiers, but pulling that off won’t be so simple.

Caicedo retired from the national team in 2017, reportedly in response to the sacking of former Ecuador manager Gustavo Quinteros, but with his form this season, the Ecuador FA and Cruyff are reportedly doing everything they can to bring Caicedo back into the fold.

In a report from Italian Lazio website LaLazioSiamoNoi, both Ecuadorian FA member Carlos Manzur and captain Antonio Valencia have tried to reach out to Caicedo alongside Cruyff, trying to bring the 31-year-old back, with Valencia being quoted as saying “I have not spoken with Caicedo, but I can say that our National Team needs footballers like him. He is doing very well at the moment, we know that he can truly return (to the National Team).”

Beyond his great season with Lazio, Caicedo is the fifth-highest Ecuadorian national team scorer of all time, with only Enner Valencia having scored more for Ecuador amongst active players. Despite this, Caicedo has not spoken about any personal or external desires for his return to the national team.
