According to Spanish website Defensa Central, Nacho Fernández looks set to remain with Real Madrid.
This news comes despite his lack of playing time – being used as nothing more than a substitute this past season – and having a contract which expires in the summer of 2021; the 30-year-old has made just nine appearances in total this season for Los Blancos, with only five being from La Liga.
Lazio – amongst other clubs including Napoli, Roma, Valencia, and Villarreal – have been following the central defender since this past summer. However, as reported by the same Spanish news outlet, Zinedine Zidane has blocked any potential transfer away from the club; this is because the manager sees the player as a ‘first alternative’ to the current Real Madrid defenders.
At the age of 30, Nacho would not have served as a long-term star for Lazio but would have offered plenty of experience in the short-term, as the player has played at the top level for quite some time. He officially joined Real Madrid’s first team in 2013 – after playing for Real Madrid U18, Real Madrid U19, Real Madrid C, and Real Madrid Castilla – and has since made 199 appearances for the club.
