Following reports from earlier in April 2020, Lazio is said to have once again expressed interest in Sporting CP’s Sebastián Coates. A name that has circled for quite some time, the 29-year-old defender spoke to Uruguayan radio station DelSol 99.5 about his career and the possibility of joining the Biancocelesti in Rome.
“Ever since I left Club Nacional de Football, my plan has been to return before I end my career. However, there are factors that do not depend only on myself; it also depends on the coach who is there at the time I want to go and the club’s board of directors.”
“I have a contract until 2023 with Sporting CP; I will be 32 or 33 by that time, but my dream is to end my career in Montevideo because my children have not seen me play for Nacional.”
“Lazio’s interest? I think that the press publishes things that us as players don’t even know the majority of the time. This rumor came out in Portugal, but the club and my agent didn’t mention it to me. It could be true; contacts and talks occur and players are usually the last to know.”
“Leaving Portugal? I’m comfortable at Sporting; since I arrived, I have always played. Portugal is very similar to Uruguay, as the people are very kind-hearted and the weather is also beautiful. However, football is nice as you get to discover and familiarize yourself with new places and visit cities you have never been to. And if there is the possibility of going to another club to improve…”
According to Portuguese sports newspaper Record, the defender is valued at €20 million; however, the Biancocelesti were said to not want to spend more than €15 million for the 29-year-old. He also has a contract with the Portuguese club until 2023, so a transfer looks very unlikely.
