Ultras Lazio: “We Will Protest Against the Italian Government”

Italy has been on lockdown for close to two months and although many are fed up with having to stay inside their homes in isolation from their family and friends, there is widespread awareness this is the best solution to contain the spread of COVID-19 (until a vaccine is found).

Following the beginning of Phase Two of Italy’s plan to ease restrictions with regard to Coronavirus – which occurred on May 4, 2020, and has involved a very gradual re-opening of businesses (while maintaining a number of precautions) – Ultras Lazio released an official statement directed at the Italian government.

“With reference to the statement made by ‘La Voce del Nord’, in which they announced a street protest against the Italian government, Ultras Lazio wishes to clarify that we are absolutely not the organizer of this event. However, note that we have decided to join, as many other others in Italy have already done and/or are planning on doing.”

“We firmly believe in the need to take to the streets and protest against our government, since they are starving us (its citizens) after limiting all of our basic personal freedoms.”

Italians across the country have been – and continue to be – wary about their government’s decisions. Most of the population believes (and understands) that the pandemic is far from over; Italy’s death toll will surpass 30,000 on May 9, 2020, and the total number of cases will surpass 216,000. However, as Radio France Internationale mentioned, there seems to be light at the end of the tunnel. This is because the number of people with the virus being admitted into intensive care units has been dropping steadily since the end of April 2020.

“We joined as a group of fans and as citizens. And as a group, we released this official statement.”

“If some local radio station and/or TV station and/or some social phenomenon made people believe that we were the organizers of this event, that person did it without our consent and are wrong.”

“However, we would like to take this opportunity to renew the invitation for ALL to participate; we want to specify that this initiative has no political color, nor is it parochial, but it is aimed only and exclusively at reminding our leaders that we are not sleeping and we do not accept this current state of affairs.”

“IF YOU DO NOT HAVE THE COURAGE TO REBELL, YOU DO NOT HAVE THE RIGHT TO COMPLAIN!”.

If Phase Two is successful, Phase Three will occur soon after. This will involve a complete return to ‘life as normal’ for people in the country.
