Several rumours have been circling regarding Paris Saint-Germain’s suspected interest in Lazio and Montenegro international Adam Marušić. This is the outcome of a report first published by French news outlet L’Equipe in February of 2020, outlining that the Ligue 1 side are yet to invest in a replacement for Thomas Meunier, who will leave France at the end of this 2019/20 season to join German side Borussia Dortmund.
With a void on the right flank to be filled, PSG Sporting Director Leonardo has deemed the Biancocelesti wing-back a possible solution; as a result, the Ligue 1 side is said to have made an initial offer of €15 million for the player. However, as Lazio President Claudio Lotito demands at least €25 million to allow him to leave, he declined this proposal.
Currently 27 years of age, Marušić was signed by Lazio in the summer of 2017 from Belgian first division side KV Oostende for just €5.5 million. Since then, he has made 83 total appearances for the Biancocelesti, scoring seven goals and providing six assists.
Although his first season was a massive success in Rome, the same could not be said about his second year (2018/19 season) by which it seemed that something was wrong with the player. This was further confirmed by the fact that Marušić was struggling – and continued to struggle – with several injuries (hip, abductor, thigh) throughout the season, and ahead of the 2019/20 season. As a result, Manuel Lazzari was signed in the summer of 2019 to become the starter on the right flank, thus pushing the Montenegrin out of the starting eleven.
As it stands, Marušić has two years left on his contract by which he makes approximately €1.9 million per season. Although rumours emerged (in May 2020) stating that Lazio was looking to offer the player a contract extension, this seems to have been a ploy to make PSG offer a larger sum to secure him in the summer of 2020; and it seems to have worked.
As recently reported by La Lazio Siamo Noi, Leonardo has once again contacted Marušić’s agents to understand the player’s current situation. Although a second bid has yet to arrive, it is said that the Ligue 1 side are preparing an offer of €17-18 million + bonuses to try and convince Lotito. However, it is important to note that PSG would like to spend less than €25 million (including bonuses) to secure the player.
