The Biancocelesti acquired the Kosovo international for €7.5 million from RB Salzburg in the summer of 2018. However, the now 27-year-old midfielder was unable to adapt to football in Italy; Berisha made just 22 appearances and 6 starts in all competitions for the club in two seasons – only 11 appearances were in Serie A where he made a single start. This disappointing spell in Rome was due to several injuries, a lack of consistent playing time and, ultimately, a lack of confidence.
It is important to note that it seemed as if Lazio had lost their patience with the player very early on. After spending just a year and a half at the club (failing to impress), he was loaned out for the second half of the 2019/20 season to Bundesliga side Fortuna Düsseldorf with an option-to-buy. However, since the club was relegated to the second tier of German football, they decided not to take up the option.
