Currently 24 years of age, the attacker spent the majority of his youth career in his country of birth (playing for Independiente Medellín), before moving to Finland in the winter of 2016 to join Veikkausliiga side HJK Helsinki on loan (and consequentially being purchased outright in the winter of 2017).
After just a year and a half in Finland – scoring 46 goals and providing 13 assists in 62 matches for Helsinki – he was purchased by Scottish Premiership side Rangers in the summer of 2017 for just €1.2 million. Since then, he has made 137 appearances, scored 77 goals, and provided 29 assists in all competitions for the Scottish club.
There is no question that Lazio are looking to bolster their attack this summer, especially with UEFA Champions League football looking likely in the 2020/21 season, and no alternative upfront to Ciro Immobile apart from Felipe Caicedo.
While Watford 22-year-old striker Luis Javier Suárez Charris (who is currently on loan at Real Zaragoza for the 2019/20 season) was said to be the Biancocelesti’s primary target, negotiations have stalled according to ITA Sport Press. As a result, Lazio have decided to focus their time on Morelos, who is not only a similar profile to Luis Suárez but also a proven striker with plenty of experience.
As it stands, Rangers value Morelos at €20 million. With another three years remaining in his contract, they will not budge from this evaluation, especially as the player has not expressed any sort of desire to leave the club this summer. However, with plenty of clubs enquiring about him, it seems as if it is only a matter of time before he makes a move to a top side in Europe.
