Sergei Semak, Zenit St. Petersburg’s manager, believes his team deserved three points against Lazio in last night’s Champions League fixture.
I Biancocelesti came into the match with a number of missing players and did not look like themselves. Off their first chance, Zenit took the lead through Aleksandr Erokhin. The Italians tried to equalize for the remainder of the game and they did so through Felipe Caicedo. He scored a late goal after an assist from the left flank from Francesco Acerbi.
Speaking to Zenit’s official website, Semak revealed that he had hoped his team would earn a victory.
In the first half we controlled the ball possession. After our goal, Lazio started playing more aggressively and made things more difficult. It’s a shame we didn’t manage to score again. We deserved to win.
Lazio is second in a group that also includes Borussia Dortmund and Club Brugge. While the Serie A side is the favorite to qualify for the next round, Zenit currently lies in fourth place. Semak talked about his side’s chances to make it out of the group.
We only have a few chances left. In our first two home games, we only managed one point. The real regret is not being able to win against Brugge where we deserved victory.
Lazio meets Zenit, again, on the 24th of November in a repeat of last night’s fixture.
