Lazio Loanee Jordan Lukaku: “Lazio Wanted to Send Me to Watford”

Jordan Lukaku signed for Lazio back in 2016. However, the Belgian wing-back only managed to play in a total of 66 matches (over four years) for the Serie A side before they decided to loan him out in the 2020 Summer Transfer Window.

Speaking to Het Laatste Nieuws, Lukaku talked about his decision to return to Belgium.

I had not really decided to leave Rome. Two days before the transfer window was over, Lazio wanted to send me to Watford, but I refused.

Then, my brother Romelu got in touch with Lucien D’Onofrio. I also asked Peter Smeets, an Agent who is a friend of mine, to close a deal with Club Brugge or Anderlecht.

However, the first destination would have been difficult given that Lazio was in the same Champions League group as Brugge. As for Anderlecht, the transition would have been complicated, given their financial situation.

Lukaku previously played in the Belgian First Division between 2011 and 2016 for both RSC Anderlecht and KV Oostende. The player says that his brother’s involvement was vital in securing this new deal; however, he has only played a total of three minutes for Antwerp thus far since joining the club.
