Lazio Defender Acerbi Outstanding for Italy Against Poland

Francesco Acerbi / Italy

Lazio central defender Francesco Acerbi is currently on international duty with Italy. On Sunday, November 15, 2020, he started and played the entire match against Poland. Italy scored twice and won the match 2-0; this match is being considered one of the best matches under Roberto Mancini’s management.

While quality possession and victories are the trademarks of this new Azzurri side, everything seems to rests on solid foundations. But against Poland, even with Leonardo Bonucci and Giorgio Chiellini absent, the Azzurri’s defence did not lose competitiveness.

The new backline partnership yesterday consisted of the duo of Lazio’s Francesco Acerbi and Inter’s Alessandro Bastoni; both of whom prevented Poland’s striker Robert Lewandovski from making any sort of impact.

The statistics of Acerbi speak for themselves. The Lazio central defender won 6 of 7 aerial duels and had 4 successful tackles. It was another flawless performance from the Italian Lion. However, Acerbi – who is currently 32-years-old – has not always been this successful.

He has worked extremely hard for this opportunity to play for his country and he deserves every minute after overcoming cancer and alcoholism. With a strong work ethic, always showing accountability and determination, calcio fans have plenty of reasons to call him the Italian Lion.
