Lazio midfielder Lucas Leiva discussed a possible return to his native Brazil later in his career in an interview with Brazilian media outlet Globo Esporte earlier today.

I think that after 30 you end up not thinking much about the future, you assess year to year, based on how your body responds. I’m very happy here at Lazio, I don’t think about the future much.

However, the nostalgia I have for my family and for the people I left in Brazil has not faded; to return to play there is something I have always had in mind.

The 33-year-old Brazilian midfielder, who is contracted to the Biancocelesti until 2022, then highlighted how it might be nice to play in Brazil again and how he started his career there.

I don’t know if there will be time, but who knows, in the near future, if I feel it will be the right choice, it would be nice to come back.

At Grêmio I had my first experiences as a professional. I also have to be careful to talk about coming back. In the past I talked about this possibility and unleashed the anger of the fans. They said I would be coming back in a wheelchair!

Leiva, who joined the Roman side in 2017, has made seven appearances across all competitions so far this season, for a total of 444 minutes. In that time, he has earnt two yellow cards and helped the side keep one clean sheet.

The Brazilian has been struggling with inconsistent Covid-19 tests in recent weeks, but has finally tested negative and returned to Simone Inzaghi’s set-up.

The former Liverpool man is a core part of the Italian coach’s system, starting in all but one game so far this campaign.

Leiva has won one Coppa Italia and two Supercoppa Italiana with Lazio.
