Lazio coach Simone Inzaghi discussed the Biancocelesti’s thrilling 3-1 Champions League win over Russian side Zenit St. Petersburg in an interview with Italian broadcaster Mediaset after the game.

That’s what I asked for yesterday, we knew the importance of this game. We were very good against Zenit. We could have scored more but let’s not forget that we were playing against Zenit, the number one seed in the group.

We were good at making it look like a simple game. They are a technical team, with very good players, they never play trivial games, we suffered in Russia, but tonight we played a great game, prepared for very well. The guys were very good.

The Italian coach spoke about the performance of 30-year-old star striker Ciro Immobile, who scored only minutes into the match.

We know what Ciro represents for us, he was very good.

After two weeks of nothing he came back with a day and a half of training in Crotone, on that pitch and he came back tonight with a great performance. He is very important for us.

Finally, he commented on how the team arrived for today’s game in significantly better shape than their previous two matches in the competition.

I told the guys, this was a great opportunity.

We are recovering players, we are better after the international break and think about how we played in Bruges and St. Petersburg, once as 13 and once as 14, we were very good to draw in both situations, but today we had to get the victory and we were good.

Lazio’s win over Zenit means that they are now second in their Champions League group after four games, sitting with eight points, one less than leaders Borussia Dortmund.

The Roman club can secure qualification to the next round of the competition by matching or bettering Club Brugge’s result against Zenit next week.

Lazio are currently 8th in Serie A after eight games, sitting with 14 points. Inzaghi’s side are two points behind 4th place Juventus, showing how tight the league table is.
