Roma Coach Fonseca on Derby Against Lazio: “Players Feel It Too”

Roma coach Paulo Fonseca discussed the two derbies that he has faced against Lazio in an interview on the Quarentena Da Bola Youtube channel recently.

The first time we didn’t have a great game and I think they deserved more than a draw. Unlike the return leg, when we deserved the victory.

Preparing for a derby for me is the same as preparing for a match with Napoli or Sassuolo. What changes is how the people outside the sports center feel and the players feel it too.

Last season, both Rome derbies ended in 1-1 draws, with both teams clearly impressing over the other in each leg.

The season before that, the Biancocelesti won 3-0 in the return leg but found themselves 3-1 losers in the first meeting of the season.

Last campaign, Fonseca guided the Giallorossi to a 5th place finish, eight points behind Lazio, who qualified for their first Champions League in over a decade.

This season, Roma are currently 3rd in the league after eight games, sitting on 17 points, three behind league leaders AC Milan.

The Biancocelesti are down in 8th place with 14 points, only three points behind, showing how tightly compacted the league table currently is.

The first meeting this season between the two rivals is on the 17th January, before the return leg on the 16th May.
