Dusan Basta: “I Was a Hero at the Stadio Friuli, but Fell in Love With Rome”

Sunday’s match between Lazio and Udinese will be extra-special for Dusan Basta. The Serbian played for both clubs over his career before hanging up his boots in 2019. However, he is still very much connected to his two favourite Serie A sides.

The right-back played for Udinese between 2008 and 2014. Following this, in a move that surprised and angered some of his previous fans, he transferred to Lazio in 2014; it was here that he saw out the final years of his career. Talking about the transfer, he said that although he was a God in Udine, he fell in love with Rome.

While the transfer was controversial at the time, it proved to be the right move for Basta’s career. The Serbian won his only trophies, outside of his native country, while playing for Lazio. In 2019 he earned a winner’s medal for securing the Coppa Italia with the club, while in 2017 the team won the Supercoppa Italiana.
