Ex-Lazio Captain Wilson: “Great Achievement to Be in the UCL Round of 16”

Former Lazio captain Giuseppe ‘Pino’ Wilson discussed the Biancocelesti’s qualification to the Round of 16 in the Champions League and their work in Serie A in an interview with Italian media outlet La Lazio Siamo Noi earlier today.

Against Brugge, we risked a game that we could have closed out early in the 90 minutes, but between Lazio and Brugge there was a gap that went beyond numerical superiority. That was probably the only blemish that we erased with an almost historic qualification.

Now we hope for a favorable draw even though it is difficult to talk about teams within our reach, even if one of the strongest teams were to happen, it would still be a great achievement because we are playing against one of the fifteen best teams in Europe.

I prefer to move forward, if I had the possibility to choose a team that is more accessible on paper, I would play them.

It’s difficult to pick one among the top teams, however, at this point anything can happen. The important thing is to go out there and play. Reus himself has defined Lazio as a European level team, this gives awareness.

The 75-year-old Italian, who was captain of the Lazio squad when they won their first title in the 1973/74 season, then spoke about the current situation in the league for the Roman side.

We face the league hoping to be among the top four again. It is true that there is a small gap with some teams, but excluding AC Milan we are talking about a win and a half away from the second team.

This also applies to the other teams, two and a half months are a long time for Serie A, it is better to wait until January to make judgements in this sense.

Lazio are currently 7th in the Serie A table after 10 games, sitting on 17 points, one behind rivals Roma.

Tomorrow’s opponents Hellas Verona sit only one point behind in 8th place.
