Lazio coach Simone Inzaghi discussed the Biancocelesti’s frustrating 1-1 draw with Benevento yesterday in an interview with Italian broadcaster DAZN after the game. His words were collected by La Lazio Siamo Noi.
We tried to win it in every possible way. We shouldn’t have conceded that goal, but we found a strong and well-organized team. There’s still some regret for the first half. Benevento mirrored the last few games they have played, they are compact and it’s difficult to play against them.
We tried but, due to both physical and mental tiredness, we lacked something. It was hard to repeat in the second half but, after a first half like that, you can’t go into the locker room with the game tied.
The 44-year-old Italian touched on if he was considering deploying three forwards in the game.
It’s an option we have, but after a good first half I didn’t feel like changing the set-up. The only thing I wasn’t satisfied with was the result, but I have to say that Caicedo came on very well, as did Cataldi and Pereira.
He spoke about the performance of Spanish midfielder Luis Alberto.
In my opinion he had a great match, let’s not forget that he had been out since the Brugge game. I asked him to sacrifice himself and I’m happy. It wasn’t easy for him after being out for six days.
The Lazio coach commented on the many absences in the squad.
The schedule is incredible. We are always on the limit, there is always the risk of losing a few players. Today Acerbi, Fares and Leiva weren’t there. However, this team has great potential and we can do it.
Inzaghi also discussed the game in an interview with Sky Sports Italia after the match.
Objectively, I’m not happy, we wanted the three points for the first half we played. We can’t go into the locker room at 1-1. They had a good game and we had to be more careful. We are tired, but the team tried until the end to win the game in every way.
We all have to do more. There are absences and I put some players at risk like Immobile, but I couldn’t do without him. We knew Benevento were healthy, with good players and they are playing important games and can have their say.
The goal was the result of our carelessness, but we have to be more lucid in our choices. We must always try to make the best choices. We have to be more concrete because last year we probably would have won a game like that.
Playing every two and a half days is not easy. For me this was one of the best first halves we’ve played.
The 44-year-old Italian spoke about how it felt to manage opposite his brother Pippo.
It’s certainly exciting to play against my brother, for us as for all our family, it’s not a game like the others and having him two meters away was special.
He spoke about the performance of wing back Adam Marusic.
Marusic should just be thanked because he has been playing in that position for 7 games now and I’m asking him for overtime since I’m missing some players.
Inzaghi then spoke about the 1-1 draw with Benevento in an interview with Lazio Style Radio.
We should have scored the second goal in the first half, because we had excellent 45 minutes. We should have also worked better on the goal we conceded to Benevento.
Now we need to recover some energy, some strength, it will be complicated to recover some players. We must get back to having physical and mental freshness.
The Lazio coach commented on Benevento’s performances this campaign and the work of his brother Pippo.
It’s never a match like the others, it always excites me. For 95 minutes we were opponents, then we hugged each other as is right. After a first half that we played very well, we shouldn’t have gone into half time on a 1-1 draw.
Benevento then grew, they’re an organized team with some very good patterns, and they troubled us on the break.
Finally, Inzaghi spoke about the incredibly busy schedule.
Apart from the draw, what’s most worrying is the fixtures and the injuries. Playing every three days puts the players to the test.
Tomorrow morning we’ll see how everyone is feeling when we start up again. There are seven teams involved in the cups and we are all penalized.
