Ex-Lazio Captain Wilson: “Motivation Must Be Found Competing Against Big Teams”

Former Lazio captain Pino Wilson discussed the Biancocelesti’s current position in Serie A and their upcoming games against AC Milan and Napoli in an interview with Italian media outlet La Lazio Siamo Noi.

From a mental point of view, it’s a difficult situation, but we’re not yet a third of the way through the season and this could favour a comeback. Probably the whole environment between fans, players and management have been attracted by the Champions League and we did not realize that we have lost important points in the league in the meantime.

Without being too crazy, we too can be counted among the contenders for the Scudetto and I wouldn’t have thought that teams like Benevento or Udinese could bother us to the point of making us abandon these objectives.

I think the hangover has been recovered from, now we’re facing a Napoli side without some important players like Insigne, Osimhen and Mertens, let’s try to take advantage of that to collect points.

Against the big teams, from an emotional point of view, we always have something more to give, but never as this year, considering this crazy schedule of matches, we need to take as many points as possible right away.

I hope that when we play against a big team the spirit will be there from the start because I think there are all the conditions, we need to take advantage of this moment to start a run like last year.

The lack of fans at home is certainly felt especially against teams like Napoli, but the motivation must be found in competing against the big teams of the league. Otherwise, it will be necessary to make more in-depth analyses.

He moved onto discussing Brazilian midfielder Andreas Pereira, who is currently on loan from Premier League side Manchester United.

I don’t think he’s a striker. Many see him as Correa or Caicedo’s alternative, but I think he should be seen as an alternative to Luis Alberto. However, apart from the extra-football controversy, I would never give up on the Spaniard as he is one of the few players who has some inventiveness at the moment.

Of course, if you want to bring Pereira in, you can’t do it for ten minutes, you have to give him the opportunity to enter the game on a mental level.

Finally, Wilson touched on the slight defensive crisis that the club is experiencing.

We have conceded too many goals compared to last year, the opponents are always breaking through.

I think we need to tighten up around the defense and give more coverage starting from the midfield, there are individual mistakes and lack of concentration, but it is also true that there is less filter and help in the middle of the field.

It’s a collective issue, it doesn’t concern the individual. We have to redo our concentration, recompacting ourselves first behind and then thinking about the offensive phase.
