Former Lazio midfielder Matìas Almeyda certainly has a special place in the club’s history. Over his three seasons with the Binacocelesti, he won six trophies, including helping the side win Serie A.

More so, Almeyda took part in multiple Derby della Capitale duels against AS Roma. For the Argentine midfielder, it was a unique experience for him to take part in these fixtures, especially as Lazio came away with several impressive such victories while he was with the club.

Almeyda reflected on facing AS Roma in comments relayed by the Italian-based outlet La Lazio Siamo Noi.

The Rome derby is something impressive, with a lot of passion. In three seasons at Lazio, we almost always beaten Roma. In one year, we have faced each other four times, four derbies won.

Almeyda compared the Rome derby with another unique rivalry in Serie A football, but for him, Lazio’s derby against AS Roma stands out for one particular reason.

Three seasons spent in Lazio were unique. The Inter derby is not against Milan, but with Juventus. This is the national derby, but it does not have as much passion as that of Lazio-Roma, even if it remains the most important. It was nice to play them both.

As mentioned, Almeyda and his Lazio sides certainly recorded many outstanding wins over Roma that fans today still greatly cherish and look back on.
