Lazio & Genoa Interested in Signing Ex-Arsenal Defender Sokratis on a Free Transfer

Lazio and Genoa are both interested in signing former Arsenal defender Sokratis Papastathopoulos, according to a report from Italian broadcaster Sky Sports Italia (via La Lazio Siamo Noi) earlier today.

The report details how the 32-year-old Greek defender mutually terminated his contract with Arsenal earlier today, and is now available to join a new club as a free agent.

Genoa are keen to be reunited with Sokratis, who played with the Rossoblu from 2008 to 2010, before he joined AC Milan.

The Biancocelesti are also interested, needing a strong replacement for the injured Luiz Felipe, who will be out until late March or early April.

The Italian clubs are not alone in their pursuit of the Greek defender, as clubs from Europe like Olympiakos and Real Betis are also involved.

Sokratis made 29 appearances across all competitions last season for Arsenal, for a total of 2325 minutes. In that time, he scored three goals and helped the team keep seven clean sheets.
