Former Lazio Goalkeeper Silvio Proto Reflects on Playing Career

Former goalkeeper Silvio Proto decided to call it a career over the recent winter transfer window. With not much playing time insight, Proto elected to retire after three seasons with the Italian side.

Proto is now looking back on his playing career, which was one where he suited up for five different teams. As he detailed to the Belgian-based outlet La Derniere Heure, it was a career filled with difficulties along the way.

Football is something I went through. I have been a part of it since I was 16. It was no longer a pleasure, but a job. At first, it was fun but it changed quickly.

When I moved from La Louvière to Anderlecht, for example, The pressure, the media coverage, the criticism … Football was not my favorite thing to do. I preferred to go fishing or golf.

With the pressure, I was often stressed at home. Going back, I don’t know if I would make the same life choice.

Proto won 15 trophies over his career, which included the Supercoppa Italiana triumph with Lazio in 2019.
