Bayern Munich midfielder Leon Goretzka discussed yesterday’s 4-1 win over Lazio in the Champions League Round of 16 first leg when speaking to the Bavarian club’s official outlets after the game.

I’m happy to come back right away into such an awesome match, in a knockout match in the Champions League. We got into the game well.

That was important, because in the weeks before we’ve coasted through the first few minutes a bit.

We managed to bring that gameday face onto the pitch, were aggressive from the start and had good control. We won the balls very high up the pitch, which means the way to the goal was closer.

That’s what made us strong last season. We’ve set ourselves the goal of getting back to that level. Today was a good step towards that.

The 26-year-old Goretzka, who is contracted to Bayern until 2022, has made 22 appearances across all competitions so far this season, for a total of 1631 minutes.

In that time, he has scored five goals and provided four assists.
