When a player reveals a desire to play for a certain club, they may just see it as a harmless, throwaway remark. However, when that player is settled and admired by fans of their current employer, it’s not the wisest comment to make.
With that in mind, just how did Lazio fans react upon hearing that their respected midfielder, Sergej Milinkovic-Savic, expressed a wish to play with the mighty Real Madrid at some stage in his career?
Milinkovic-Savic has been with Lazio since switching from Belgian side Genk in 2015 and since then, he’s developed into one of the most influential midfielders in Serie A. He’s one of the first names to be included on Simone Inzaghi’s team sheet and has also been one of the Eagles’ most reliable players.
With a healthy goals-to-games ratio for a midfielder, Milinkovic-Savic has been a vital component in the coach’s project and he’s been a part of the side that claimed three domestic trophies in three seasons. However, while he’s stood out in Lazio’s squad, the Serbian international has been constantly linked with a move away from the Rome club. Now, a report via https://as.com/futbol/2021/02/06/primera/1612616338_250662.html states that Milinkovic-Savic has ‘dreamt of’ playing for Real since he was a child.
UCL in Sight
With over half the Serie A campaign having been completed, Lazio’s season is very much alive. After 23 games, Simone Inzaghi’s men find themselves in sixth place and, while there is a significant, ten-point gap behind league leaders Inter Milan, there’s still plenty to play for. A top-four finish and a place in the Champions League is in Lazio’s sights and, at the same point in the season, The Eagles are just behind fourth-placed Roma by one point.
If one takes a look at odds supplied by bookmakers linked to https://www.sbo.net/, they would find that Lazio are merely sixth favourites to finish inside that top four. The odds involved may offer a tempting proposition and the Eagles are in a good position to convert and make it into the UCL places. The sportsbooks in question will continue to update the market and sbo.net will also provide news and opinion as the Serie A season develops.
Over at Inter Milan, Danish international midfielder Christian Eriksen is a subdued figure on the benches at the San Siro. While playing for his former club Tottenham Hotspur, Eriksen also expressed a desire to play for Real Madrid and, from that point, his relationship with Spurs fans turned sour.
Unlike Milinkovic-Savic, the Danish international was coming to the end of his contract and his imminent departure was no great surprise but, by manufacturing his own link to Real, many supporters instantly forgot about the great contributions that Christian Eriksen had made to their club.
Sergej Milinkovic-Savic risks getting the same type of reaction from Eagles fans and, while the two situations aren’t completely identical, there are some unfortunate comparisons.
Lazio are developing and the club will want to keep all of their best players at the Stadio Olimpico for now. In an era where Juventus have been dominant, the club’s 2017 and 2019 victories in the Supercoppa Italiana and the 2019 Coppa Italia trophy were impressive achievements but they won’t be enough to satisfy Simone Inzaghi. As an absolute minimum, Lazio will need to target Champions League football and that makes 2020/21 a crucial season. Playing on Europe’s biggest stage will help to placate the star names and UCL football is vital if the coach is to keep this squad together.
Sergej Milinkovic-Savic is no different than any other top player, in the sense that several clubs may well be making enquiries about his availability when the season comes to a conclusion. The issue is that the Serbian international has made that comment in regards to Real Madrid and, while it may seem harmless enough, it may not go down too well with Eagles fans.
