Former Lazio defensive midfielder Lucas Biglia spoke to Gazzetta dello Sport (via Lazio News), where he discussed his four seasons with the Biancocelesti.
The 35-year-old made over 130 appearances in all competitions for the club. As a result, he was a significant piece for the club during his time in Rome.
Biglia’s four seasons with Lazio came to an end in 2017 when the Argentina international decided to leave the club; he chose to head to AC Milan, which didn’t sit well with some Lazio supporters.
Nonetheless, Biglia discussed leaving Lazio and why he decided on going to Milan for his next venture.
To stay in Rome, I said no to a big European team. I can’t say which one, but I didn’t deserve to be called a mercenary. My renewal with the Biancocelesti was the longest in history; I wanted to stay. I chose Milan to try a new challenge; what’s wrong with that? I didn’t deserve the insults, and when I left Lazio, I cried.
One of the following questions that Biglia answered from the Italian media outlet is over any regrets during his time with Lazio. The midfielder mentions that the defeats in the Coppa Italia stick out to him.
The lost finals are the biggest regret. I only needed one, just one, and it would have been easier to make many decisions. The insults and criticisms I took in Auronzo two days before leaving Lazio? I didn’t deserve them. They hurt me because I have always behaved correctly with Lazio. I owed it to Tare to join the club, who one day came to see me in Belgium and at the end of the game said that I would become a starter and a captain with Lazio.
Finally, Biglia discussed receiving the captain’s armband during his time with Lazio and helping lead the squad.
A mess happened. Jokes aside, it was an honor – a responsibility. At first, he wanted to give Klose the armband, but he was at the end of his career, and he said no. The choice was between Candreva and me; Pioli chose me. Then Antonio refused to be assistant captain, but there was and still is no controversy between us.
