Heading into the fixture against FC Crotone, Lazio needed to come away with three points, considering their opponent is heading towards relegation. With the Biancocelesti fighting to remain in the top-four race, dropping points against the bottom half of the table is one way to avoid a top-four finish.
Once the ball got rolling, Simone Inzaghi’s side struggled against Crotone as they failed to pull away from them and let their opponent hang around. Through 80 minutes, they were 2-2 and marching towards a draw, which would have been a disastrous result for Lazio.
Nonetheless, the Rome-based club snatched a victory with an 84th-minute strike from Ecuadorian forward Felipe Caicedo. Tuttosport director Xavier Jacobelli gave credit to Caicedo for saving Lazio during an interview with Tuttomercatoweb (via Lazio News).
Just think of Crotone who held up against the Biancocelesti at the Olimpico against Lazio on Friday: if Caicedo hadn’t invented that goal almost at the end, five minutes from the end, it would probably have ended in a draw.
Lazio walked away with the three points and sits in seventh place, six points away from fourth place Atalanta BC. Lazio can ill afford to drop points against these clubs, so plenty will say thanks to Caicedo for rescuing them.
