“They Were the Most Competitive Years of My Career” — Pepe Reina Reflects on Time at Liverpool

Lazio goalkeeper Pepe Reina recalled his stint with Liverpool as the most competitive of his lengthy career so far.

Reina played in eight total seasons with Liverpool. The Spanish goalkeeper enjoyed formidable success during his time with the Premier League side, which included winning four trophies.

While Reina later went on to play with the likes of Bayern Munich, he still believes that his run with Liverpool was the most challenging of his career. In a talk with Futbol Emotion on Instagram, Reina looked back on just what stood out about the days with Liverpool.

I had a great time in England as a footballer. They were the most competitive years of my career, always in the Champions League and every year we were fighting for the title. A dream to play at Anfield. Playing about 400 games in the Liverpool shirt was the best thing that happened to me.

Reina also drew comparisons with playing in Italy to the multiple other leagues that he has gone on to feature in over the course of his career.

In England, we defend less. In Italy, the pace is lower, with more breaks. The way the game is played in Germany and England, however, is completely different, with more rhythm.

Reina has so far won eight club trophies over his career.
